Japanese American Tribal Roots Music is what it is. It is the voice, the style, the attitude. It can be Asian or it can be American, and perhaps both at the same time. I've been reading a lot about the AAM (Asian American Music) on the internet, and a lot of it is wishful thinking. The most important thing is that we make music, a lot of it. If there are no Asian American superstars, it is because we ain't good enough, plain and simple. One of the tenets of art is that it has to be genuine and authentic to the artist, something real and personal while universal at the same time. Imitators or hack artists simply don't make the grade. It may not always be the most ideal, the most slick, the most pretty thing on earth (though nothing's wrong with pretty), but at least it has to be honest and enjoyable in a human way. The real question is are Asians really human enough to be themselves? If the only thing we want is fame and fortune, then we are missing the point about the art. We have to love the art. When we imitate something, it says that we don't love ourselves or our art.
